Hilton Head Island

I have been vacationing in Hilton Head as long as I can remember. My precious Nan-nee and Gran-dee have a condo in Sea Pines right by Harbor Town so for Memorial Day Brian and I along with Momma and Jim headed to the beach-oh-baby! As soon as we were off work Friday, Brian and I loaded up the car and hit the road. We decided it was better to get down there late Friday and have a full day Saturday than just leaving early on Saturday. And I am so glad we did. We had a leisure morning and then headed to the pool to get some sunshine. The weather was amazing; Brian would probably tell you it was too hot but I loved it. Mom and Jim attended an early wedding in Macon and then came down, arriving just in time for dinner. Crazy Crab in Harbor Town is one of my favorite places to go, partially for the atmosphere and partially for the food. It is right on the marina, where rows of beautiful yachts dock; the lighthouse stands tall; and lots of fun little shops to visit. The basket of hushpuppies is a gem too- wish I could still eat as many as I once could.

After dinner we walked around and to our pleasant surprise good ol Greg Russel was setting up for the night. Let me tell you a bit about Mr Greg Russel. Each year starting Memorial Day weekend he brings his guitar, invites all the kids up on stage with him to sit and he sings a few song each night under a huge tree in the middle of Harbor Town. We found out that this is his 34th year doing this. I remember sitting up there when I was young, hoping and praying that when it came time for him to pick a few boys and girls from the audience to sing a song with him that it would be me. Mom openly shared with us and even with strangers sitting around us that I would practice my song on the beach that day in case I got picked. Not once in all the years we were there was I ever chosen - pretty sad huh? Oh well I survived and am probably stronger because of it. Jim and Brian did not enjoy this as much as mom and I did but they were great and allowed us to reminisce.

Sunday we loaded up our beach bags, coolers, chairs and umbrellas and headed to the beach. Mom and I basically lounged around the entire time but Jim and Brian needed to have an activity to do. They aren't the best to just sit and sunbath. Jim brought some golf balls and they dug small holes in the sand and played beach golf. No clubs were used; they just threw/rolled the ball to see who could score the most. So funny story. My mom was taking their picture playing the game, a picture of Jim on his turn and then Brian during his. But she wanted a picture of them both so she said, "Okay now you two get together and hold your balls for a picture." Of course neither of us got it at first but a few people sitting close turned to look at what they were 'holding'. The guys started laughing and then mom and I got the humor behind it.

Once we had enough of the beach we loaded everything back up and Brian and I went for a bike ride. I took him to a nearby horse ranch to see all the pretty horses. Then we just went riding along some different bike paths, through some neighborhoods to drool over the houses, and over to the Sea Pines golf course where the Heritage Tournament is played each year right after the Masters.

Sunday we had the treat to go to the Sea Pines Country Club for dinner. It is absolutely stunning and the food is out of the world good. We all ate entirely too much and took the phrase "fat and happy" to a new level. Literally we rolled out of there to the nearest Publix to hit up the Red Box and grab a movie for the night.

On the way out Monday we all hit up the Tanger Outlets; the sales were ridiculous. We all left with a little more color on our faces, food in our bellies, and with at least one bag of goodies- some of us might have gotten more than others. It was an incredible relaxing trip and I am so thankful that my sweet Nan-nee and Gran-dee allowed us to vacation at their little oasis.

  1. Ok Meghan, this is a little bit scary! We were in Hilton Head this past weekend too for Memorial Day and I can't believe we didn't run into you. Chris' parents have a place right by Habour Town at Ketch. It is right near the boats. Like you, on Friday night we ate at Crazy(always eat there when we arrive) and then watched Greg Russell after dinner. I can't wait until have children to take to that. It is so precious.

Then we were at the beach Saturday and Sunday then on Monday we stopped at the outlets on our way out too. That is so crazy I hate that we missed y'all. Hope you are well!!
